Please clarify. Are you implying that the word "baptism" shouldn't be translated as "immerse" or are you just attempting to correct my apparent misunderstanding of when "baptism" was transliterated by the English? If the former is true, what lexicographical evidence supports your claim? If the latter is what you intended to convey, what sources are you citing?

Bo, I found it interesting that the guy you obtained this article from used the same terminology we often employ in discussing these matters when he said, " it is good to continually focus on the clear stream of water that is God’s truth instead of the muddy waters clouded by our enemy’s use of misinformation and misapplied zeal of [the opponents of the gospel]." Keep channeling the clear water of God's truth our way through this blog. Thanks for all you do.

Thanks for posting this. As I think about the radical reformation that has taken place in my theology, this article has reminded me that it all started with God's gracious illumination of the doctrine of salvation. People frequently ask me what situation or event or sermon brought about my acceptance of sound doctrine. I always struggle to answer that because there is no one thing that started it all. That being said, however, reading this article has reminded me that the common denominator in all the situations, events, and sermons that I tend to recount is the life-changing power of the gospel. After I embraced this truth, I could no longer in good conscience or with intellectual honesty hold on to the man-centered doctrines inherent to my upbringing. I am trusting our gracious God to magnify Himself even more by illuminating this truth to the converted and revealing this truth to the unconverted.

Re: "This same principle applies to the word “baptism.” Why was it transliterated and not translated?"

Your comment indicates a misunderstanding of the history and etymology of the English word, which had been in use in England for centuries preceding the English translation undertaken by Englishmen. It was most emphatically not transliterated by the translators. It was already an English word.

This is an awesome passage of Scripture. Romans is certainly an amazing book that God has graciously given us to show us the truth of the Gospel and theology. I'm humbled to think that God has revealed this great mystery unto me who am so undeserving. I pray we would all rejoice in the sovereignty of our God!

I just finished listening to MacArthur talk about Spurgeon yesterday. He admits that Spurgeon was not an exegete but claims that his sermons are worth their weight in gold because they were informed by his Biblical theology.

This is one of me and Tonya's favorite songs. Wouldn't it make a great special. If asked to sing in chapel at Master's, I'm bringing her to sing it and then I would like for her to sit down and allow everyone a few minutes to meditate. Thanks for the post.

Amen! This is a teaching that I think so many miss in the happy-clappy presentations of God.

Confession time -- I listen to K-LOVE in the car with my kids. I haev found that it is going steadily downhill. There is a song whose first line is, "He's not mad at you" and then the chorus tells the listener "You...can come as you are." Well the chorus is true, but the first line is wrong. He is exceedingly angry and is absolutely right to be angry. After all, He is God and He is holy.

Forgetting this really cheapens the gospel. Why did Christ have to die were it not for the righteous wrath of God?
