I have always wondered what would happen if someone came to me doubting their salvation and in an attempt to comfort them I asked them if they had ever eaten eggs. What would most evangelicals think if I told that person that they can be sure they are saved because they have eaten eggs. Most would say, “That is ridiculous. Eating eggs has nothing to do with one’s salvation.” And that is my point. Eating eggs has nothing to do with salvation just like writing a date in the front of your Bible has nothing to do with salvation and repeating a formulated prayer has nothing to do with salvation. Any attempt to gain assurance apart from the clear evidences provided in Scripture is absolutely absurd!

Entirely too true, Bo! The opposite can be true, as well. Some people worry that because they don’t have a date, or a specific memory of a crisis decision, they worry that they are not saved. I encounter these people far more often. My question to them is, “In what are you placing your faith right now for eternal life.” Most of them answer, “Why, in Christ alone.” Then I take them to the scriptures, and show them that if they are trusting RIGHT NOW in Christ alone, they have eternal life. Hebrews is very clear on this as well. We are saved by grace through faith, not a date on a Bible.
